Home Stretch Fitness Success Stories

With respect to working out and staying fit, in the past I have belonged to one gym or another. Back then my workouts were of the usual kind, where after work I would head to the gym and lift some weights and maybe try and get in some cardio. My knowledge of working out properly came from reading “fitness magazines”, talking to some of my buddies and then developing my own workout.

No doubt when I was working out then, there were times I was doing more harm than good to my body. But being young, my body was not apt to give me too much grief if I over lifted or worked out too hard, as I always seemed to bounce back pretty quick.

Back then I also had a lot more free time then I do now. I could go to the gym and spend anywhere from 30min to two hours, pending how I was feeling and how motivated I was.

But of course my fitness routine came crashing down with the birth of my first child. I was 35, and all of a sudden, all of the free time that I had enjoyed, suddenly evaporated. It was also around this time, I was starting to notice that I was getting injured more often when it came to playing soccer, running, climbing, skiing etc.

As I settled into a busy career and fatherhood, my workouts became sporadic and were not helped with the arrival of our second child. Three months before my 40th birthday, I injured my back skiing and found myself on a couch, in pain and wondering if this was to be a precursor or a foreshadow of what was waiting for me in my forties.

It was then that I had two serious epiphanies around my health and fitness:

  1. Time was my most precious commodity and therefore my workouts had to be designed to ensure maximum value for time spent.
  2. I wanted to continue to play sports and insure that I stayed injury free no matter what I did.

I began to look around for a personal trainer who could help with my two goals. It was then that I meet Wendy Peterson of Home Stretch Fitness. She understood my situation immediately. It was no longer about lifting weights to look good, it was now about working out in the most effective manner possible with the goal of being able to play multiple sports and stay injury free. In the end it came down to quality of life for me. Staying fit and being able to participate in the physical activities that I loved was key to my personal happiness.
Working with Wendy, she reinforced the importance of working on my core and how if I kept them strong, I would be able to participate in multiple sports and physical activities and stay injury free.

After three months of working with Wendy, I celebrated my 40th birthday with a four day mountaineering trip. Not only did I have an amazing time and not once did I feel out of shape or fatigued, but I returned home injury free and looking forward to the next ten years of climbing, skiing, running and playing soccer.

Thank you Wendy, for all your expertise that has lead me towards life changing results!

I have always been an active person. From skating in the winter, to running, hiking and wakeboarding in the summer, I always liked to be doing something. Four years ago, all of that changed. On my way home from work one day, I ended up in a car accident when another driver ran a stop sign. After an ambulance ride and many hours at the hospital, I was told that nothing was broken, but that I had deep tissue and muscle damage. At first I thought; great – nothing’s broken so there’s nothing to worry about. I will be back to normal in no time. I was wrong.

After the accident, I found myself at home on the couch. I was extremely bored and every move I made was painful. To deal with this, I turned to food. I soon started to gain weight, and became more frustrated and upset because I couldn’t do anything about it. Eventually, I was moving around the house more and went back to work, but was still in a lot of pain. I wasn’t allowed to do any of the activities that I had previously enjoyed, and ended up watching others do them instead. I felt depressed and ate more to deal with it, causing more depression and more eating. It was a vicious circle.

I started out slowly, with Physiotherapy and Massage therapy the first year, and added an exercise program from a Kinesiologist to start rebuilding my muscles the following year. As my body began to get stronger, I added Yoga to my rehab routine and eventually added Wendy’s Pilates class. The more I did, the better I felt, and the more I was able to try.

This summer I decided to push myself a little bit further, and signed up for Wendy’s bootcamp class. I was nervous at first about whether I would be able to fully participate or not. My work with the physiotherapist and kinesiologist helped me to understand my body more, but I was still unsure whether or not I would be able to do the different exercises that everyone else would be doing without pain.

Wendy’s classes were great. She kept them upbeat and fun, and we never stopped moving. Wendy was able to modify exercises for me when I needed so that I could continue to participate and get the most out of each class. On days when I was upset and frustrated with the limitations my body placed on me, Wendy helped me stay positive by reminding me how far I had come from the accident, and even how far I’d come since starting bootcamp. I soon found my energy levels increasing and started to notice differences in my body. I have lost 10 of the pounds that I gained after the accident, and my muscles have started to show more tone and definition.

It has been four years since the accident, and although I still experience pain at times, I am doing much better. I now enjoy many of the activities I used to do before the accident instead of watching others exercising again, and the success I have had with Wendy have made me feel much better about myself, both mentally and physically. I still have more work to do, but Wendy has helped give me to confidence and motivation to continue working towards my fitness goals.
